Portrait of Premek

The unattain(able|ed) ideal

Give little, but that little good and beautiful, and explain it thoroughly.

Welcome to my pages. Here is just a brief "let me introduce myself" and the links left lead to more ... Enjoy, and if you want or need to, drop me a line.

Who am I ...

I was born some two years after the Prague Spring in Pilsen — the home of The Lager — in the Czech Republic aka Czechia (formerly Eastern, now Central Europe :-) . My parents gave me a uniquely Czech name dating back to early history of our country. I keep on living in Pilsen despite ocassional break-outs elsewhere.
Happily married with Jana who is an anglophile as well (the two of us spent altogether 2.5 years on the British isles).
When 13, I went “tramping” (in the Czech, not American meaning of the word) for the first time and, with a bunch of life-friends, have largely kept off the beaten track since. Taking camera with me if possible, the road often goes on to Domaslav, Holostřevy or various other places in the beautiful Czech countryside.
And thanks to C.S.Lewis’s understanding of mere Christianity, it became for me also the way to His kingdom (here on Earth proxied by local franciscan parish).

... and what am I

My Linked-In Profile has more detail than what's below.

Got an engineering degree in Computer Science in 1993 at the University of West Bohemia, spending also one term at the (at that time) Manchester Polytechnic (UK) as a TEMPUS student. And, probably because one university wasn’t enough and I really wanted back to Yorkshire, in 1994-1995 I undertook and finished MSc course in Advanced Software Engineering at the Department of Computing of Sheffield University, UK (the master thesis project was done with EASAMS Ltd., part of GEC-Marconi, in Newcastle upon Tyne). The whole study was possible thanks to the Excalibur Scholarship Scheme. In 2004 finished PhD at the Faculty of Math and Physics, Charles University, Prague, in the Distributed Systems Group (now Department of Distributed and Dependable Systems); the thesis was on Specification-Based Component Substitutability and Revision Identification with professor František Plášil as my supervisor. In May 2012 the aggregate of the follow-up work lead to my successful habilitation in component modeling and substitutablity and acquiring the associate professor (“docent”) title.

At present I serve as the head of the School of Computing in Plzen, and keep teaching mainly software engineering and doing research in modular software verification, visualization and development methodologies. I lead the ReliSA research group and participate in IFIP TC2, Informatics Europe and some other professional bodies.

Vizte můj Linked-In profil pro podrobnější informace.

Souhrn návazných výzkumných aktivit, včetně mých doktorandů, vyústil v květnu 2012 v obhájení habilitační práce o modelování a nahraditelnosti komponent a získání titulu docent v oboru softwarové inženýrství.

Nyní pracuji jako vedoucí Katedry informatiky a výpočetní techniky Západočeské univerzity v Plzni, vzdělávám zejména v oblasti softwarového inženýrství a bádám o verifikaci, vizualizaci a metodikách vývoje spolehlivých modulárních softwarových systémů. Vedu výzkumnou skupinu ReliSA a jsem členem různých profesních organizací, např. IFIP TC2 a Informatics Europe.
