Experimental Verification of WSL-Based Image Representation for Compression Efficiency

Project Description:
The goal of this project is to experimentally evaluate an alternative image representation method based on Wavelength, Saturation, and Light intensity (WSL), as a potential substitute for the conventional RGB color model. The focus will be on assessing the effectiveness of WSL representation when subjected to standard image compression algorithms. By comparing compression performance and visual fidelity, the project aims to determine whether WSL encoding offers advantages in terms of data reduction or image quality.

This approach could be particularly relevant for applications involving Earth observation imagery or space communication, where efficient data transmission is critical. The project will utilize Octave as the primary tool for processing and analysis.

It is well-suited for a team of two students with interests in image processing, color models, and data compression techniques. Depending on the progress, the project may also explore perceptual aspects of WSL encoding and its robustness in noisy transmission environments.
