Storage format for 3D musculoskeletal simulations

We have developed a simulator (MuscleWrapping - MW 2.0) that estimates the deforming shapes of muscles (and other soft tissues) in reaction to bone movements. The simulation runs in a couple of minutes, and there is no way to get back.

This project aims to develop a new storage format for 3D objects of bones, muscles, ... exported at every time step. The format needs to support storing multiple views, annotations, or selections of the whole objects or their parts (e.g., vertices or triangles), and bookmarks. The storage format should be compact, allowing fast seeking and replaying a portion of the simulation from any viewpoint. The project also includes implementing the API (in C++) for manipulating the storage. The project can be extended to a master's thesis by developing a player/editor and/or compression techniques.

In the future, we could run any simulation while exporting the immediate states to this format, and one expert could then play it (with a custom speed), pause it, rotate/zoom the scene, hide some objects, select interesting parts, and bookmark it for other experts (e.g., maximal rectus femoris muscle load, improperly balanced by ...).
