Traffic control in the centers of historical cities

Grant of Ministry of Transportation No. 1F43A/003/120 solved by Institute of Information Theory and Automation AV CR (UTIA).

The project aims at automatic feed-back control of traffic microregions by means of optimal setting of the traffic lights. The control is based on a state space model, describing the queue lengths in the microregion in dependence on the measured intensities and occupancies in the arms of controlled crossroads. The model is build-up as physical one. However, there are several unknown parameters, which are necessary to estimate in common with the unknown state. This is very difficult step, as the it leads on nonlinear estimation. A combination of DD1 filter with particle filters is used for the solution.

The control itself is solved via linear programing as both the model and the system of restrictions are linear. The minimum of the weighted sum of the queue-lengths over the controlled microregion is searched for. In addition to the local control (control over single microregion), the global control (coordination between microregion) is applied, too. This upper level of the hierarchical control is synthetized in the analogy with the local one, where the arm correspond to the microregion and the queue corresponds to the number of vehicles in the microregion, which is approximately the sum of the queues in the microregion. The theoretical solution aims at a practical implementation currently prepared in Zlicin, Prague.
